Everytime I’m in Paris I take a different walking tour with Localers to rediscover the city and end up seeing the places I’ve already been to in a different way. Before telling you about my latest experience last February I want to quickly introduce Localers to new readers and followers.

Localers is a Parisian agency specialized in walking tours that aim to provide customers with a unique and magical Paris experience. They have carefully selected their charismatic guides according to their expertise and each tour is studied and built by them. So if you take a culinary tour it will be guided by a specialist, and so on. Only small groups are allowed and it builts a bond between the guide and customers, to the point that we seem to be a group of friends wandering around Paris – which makes the experience even more genuine.

30 Jours à Paris readers have a 10% off on booking any of Localers’s tours, just use the promocode 30JOURSAPARIS

This February I took the “Literature Tour – Heminway & friends”. I love books and am fascinated by History. Is there a better place to combine these two passions than Paris??

I was anxious to meet the specialist who would guide me through Saint Germain for the next 3 hours and would retrace the steps of the most famous writers and poets who immortalized Paris in their works. At the meeting point I met the other customers, 3 Americans women, and the Localers guide Alberto, an Italian guy graduated in History and Politics in Milan who has lived in several countries in the last 7 years until choosing Paris to settle down. Alberto Rigettini is a poet, playwright, screenwriter and host of “Spoken Word Paris”. Among other literary awards, he is one of the writers included in the book “Strangers in Paris”, an anthology of short stories by Anglophone writers in Paris.

Alberto Rigettini

To go back in time and follow in the footsteps of legendary writers such as Balzac, Baudelaire, Flaubert, Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, James Joyce, Ezra Pound, and Gertrude Stein, we would be discovering Saint Germain, in the Rive Gauche, but tour began on the other side of the river at the Palais Royal, with highlights of historical events from the end of the 19th century which included brothels in the royal property administered by the Duke d’Orléans, Louis-Philippe.

Under the arcades of Palais Royal.

Alberto shared with us stories of a not so glorious time, but important for the change of course for the country. From there we walked to the Rive Gauche and discovered the hotels where the writers settled. The conversation naturally flowed and Alberto ended up including some other points that were not foreseen in the original script.

Picasso in Saint-Germain.

Our group: Alberto and the girls.

We had a delicious coffee break at a bistro. We could have chosen between one of the writers’ favorite bistros, but since we all have already been to Les Deux Magots and Café de Flore we took Alberto’s suggestion and went to a trendy place related to the world of books.

Alberto guiding us around Saint-Germain.

Our tour ended in the Latin Quarter, in front of one of the most famous bookstores in the city, not by chance. In spite of its recent fame acquired mainly because of the movies shot there, the place keeps many stories since its creation in another address that no longer exists.

1st Shakespeare & Co, in Saint-Germain.

A secret spot to relax and get away from the crowds! Who has not heard about this green space, will hardly find it by chance! Despite its good location in a central área (in the 3ème), this garden is tucked away on a dead-end street called Impasse Berthaud.

Inaugurated in 2007, the Jardin Anne Frank pays tribute to the German-born Jewish girl, victim of the Holocaust. Anne died at age 15 in a concentration camp, but became a symbol against intolerance when her diary was found and published after the war. The document recounts her life during the period she had lived with her family in the “Secret Annex”, a hidden room at her father’s company in Amsterdam, during the Nazi occupation.

Anne writes a few times about the existence of a majestic chestnut tree located in front of the Secret Annex window. A sprout of the same tree was planted by the garden’s entrance and it’s fortunately growing stronger year after year!

Jardin Anne-Frank entrance.

This pleasant garden is divided into three parts: the first one houses the famous chestnut tree; the second part is the central area that has existed since the 17th century and it used to belong to Hôtel de Saint-Aignan, a former mansion that houses the Museum of Art and History of Judaism nowadays; and the third part consists of a beautiful orchard!

Central area & the semicircular pergola – Jardin Anne Frank.

Great place for kids or for those seeking a quiet place near the vibrant Rue Beaubourg, the Jardin Anne Frank has a children’s playground and some pleasant benches along the semicircular pergola at the central area, A perfect spot for resting and reading!

Playground at Jardin Anne Frank.

Tip: to explore new addresses in town I suggest you to combine a visit to Jardin Anne-Frank with two museums located a few steps away. The first one is the Doll Museum (Musée de la Poupée), adjacent to the green space, with its entrance on the Impasse Berthaud. The second attraction is on Rue du Temple, the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire du Judaïsme.

Where: Jardin Anne-Frank
Address: 14 Impasse Berthaud, 75003.
Hours: open every day – free admission.

Bisous,

Finally the day has come! Tomorrow is the French National Day, one of the most important holidays in France. The 14th of July sets the storming of the Bastille in 1789 which means the end of the monarchy and the beginning of the modern republic.

Every year the City of Light prepares a huge celebration to delight Parisians and visitors, so if you are in Paris right now and want to join the festivities, follow the schedule below:

Military parade on Champs-Elysées Avenue at 10am;

Lyric concert with the National Orchestra of France on Champ de Mars starting at 9:30pm;

Traditional fireworks at the Eiffel Tower at 11pm;

The Firemen’s Ball (see the location here)

Important:

Eiffel Tower is open only in the morning due to the preparation for fireworks.

Arc de Triomphe is only open in the afternoon due to the military parade.

The other monuments, attractions and museums such as Louvre, D’Orsay, Picasso, Sainte-Chapelle and Conciergerie, Les Invalides, Notre Dame and Sacre-Coeur, Versailles, among others, will be open.

Whatever you do on the 14th of July, do not miss the fireworks at 11pm! If you do not want to face the big crowd gathered at the Trocadéro and the Champ de Mars, my suggestions are:

Montparnasse: the top of the Montparnasse Tower or the Blvd Pasteur (between the Place de Catalogne and the Pasteur metro);

Montmartre: in front of the Sacre-Coeur.

Those places will be also packed, but it’s nothing compared to the Eiffel Tower area. Don’t forget to bring a good sandwich and some wine bottles to celebrate La Fête Nationale in style!

Bisous,

Carol
